When am I entitled to financial compensation from the airline?

My flight was canceled due to the corona virus. Am I entitled to compensation?

Unfortunately, there is no general answer to this question. However, it is certain that the corona pandemic is one exceptional circumstance can represent, which can exempt the airlines from a payment obligation. So if an airline has to cancel flights due to entry restrictions or similar measures by states, there is no right to compensation.

However, it is also possible that a flight was not canceled due to official restrictions. In this case, you are of course still entitled to financial compensation from the airline, unless there are other exceptional circumstances. Therefore we look at each case individually. Even in times of the corona pandemic, flights may have been canceled or delayed due to the airlines' own fault. Therefore, you may find a financial compensation for your flight problem can request from the airline. Ideally, simply check your delayed or canceled flight in our "Flight checker”.

If a flight is canceled by the airline itself, the passenger does not have to accept a voucher, but continues to have the right to a refund of the ticket price and financial compensation in the sense of Passenger Rights Ordinance.

I wasn't allowed on the plane. Am I entitled to compensation?

If the airline has given you boarding due to Overbooking refused, you are entitled to compensation in accordance with the EU Air Passenger Rights Regulation. Should you not have flown for other reasons (e.g. due to entry restrictions), this is not the responsibility of the airline and you cannot apply for any compensation.

My outbound flight has been canceled, but my return flight is taking place. Am I entitled to compensation?

If the outward and return flights are part of the same booking, you still have the right to either reimbursed in full to get or one Alternative transport from the airline for the canceled flight at the “earliest possible time”. This applies even if two different airlines are to operate the flights. However, interpreting the term “earliest possible time” is complicated due to the high level of uncertainty associated with the virus. So you can get your costs reimbursed if your Outbound flightcanceled was, however, the No return flight. However, if you have booked the outward and return flights separately, you unfortunately only have a right to reimbursement and possibly also compensation for the canceled flight.
