How good I can be a good welder
Welder - All details about training, occupation, salary and application
Do you like working with metal? Is diligence one of your talents? Then this job might be right for you.
With the emergence of industrialization in the 19th century, the profession of welder also emerged. The enormous demand and use of iron and steel created this job profile.
The vacancies are filled almost exclusively by men. The proportion of women in this job is extremely low at around 1.5 percent.
The area of responsibility lies in the metalworking companies, such as apparatus construction, body construction, bridge construction, pipeline construction or in heating and ventilation construction.
But what exactly do welders do?
Certified welders connect metal parts and thus contribute to construction and assembly. They use a variety of different welding processes, depending on the requirements.
After the welding process itself, however, the work is far from over. The weld seams created during assembly must be meticulously checked, depending on the later requirements and the load on the manufactured product. The weld seams must be welded evenly and cleanly, they should also be tight and be able to withstand high pressure.
Welding creates high temperatures and very bright light. Without appropriate protective clothing, the eyes and skin can be damaged very quickly. It is therefore mandatory to wear protective clothing with welding goggles, welding protection shield, welding apron and gloves.
Salary as a welder
The salary as a welder depends on various factors. The demands of the job have a major impact on the salary, with a demanding job as a welder, for example when working at lofty heights, results in higher earnings. In addition, issues such as age, qualifications or work experience play an important role in terms of wages.
If the employment contract is based on the collective bargaining requirements, a gross monthly salary of around € 2,900 to € 3,300 can be assumed as a rough guideline, including additional benefits such as Christmas bonus, vacation pay, etc.
However, the salary can also be significantly lower if there is no collective agreement.
Training as a welder - welding course - welding license
No specific school education is legally required so that vocational training as a welder can be started. However, the training schools usually require at least a secondary school certificate.
The training is regulated and organized by 2 associations. The welder's training can take place in the training institutes of the German Association for Welding and Allied Processes (DVS), or at the Technical Inspection Association (TÜV). There are also a few authorized institutions that can also conduct welding training.
The training as a welder can be completed full-time, but part-time vocational training in addition to an existing employment relationship is also possible.
The duration of the entire training is very different and depends on previous knowledge of welding, the desired qualification or the respective course. Training as a pipe welder can take around 12 weeks and training as a vertical seam welder around 20 weeks.
The training itself is not remunerated, and there are also costs for the welding course, work materials or possible accommodation if the school is not close to where you live.
Properties and requirements for the welding license
The job is determined by how you work with metal. Anyone who loves processing metals will be in very good hands in this job.
Metal is a heavy material and not for delicate hands. A certain physical constitution must therefore be present in order to be able to master the daily handling of metal.
The necessary care that a welder should show is justified. Checking the weld seams for cracks and leaks is extremely important. Mistakes at this point can be very expensive for the employer.

Application as a certified welder
Very often an application is not necessary for welders because they have completed further training with the support of the employer. Often, however, they get a more lucrative offer from another employer after further training or they look for one themselves.
The design of the application for welders is very classic. With a written or digital application that includes the application letter, résumé and certificates.
In terms of content, the focus in the application letter and in the tabular curriculum vitae should above all be on qualifications and professional experience. A neat and tidy application is the first work sample.

Trends and employment figures
The development of this profession is shaped by economic developments in the metalworking industry. The first courses in welding were held in Germany in 1909. Today around 200,000 participants complete the courses for training and further education as welders every year.
The technical requirements for this job have increased a lot. At the beginning of the training only 5 welding processes were known, today there are over 100 welding processes. As a result of the economic upswing, the number of jobs in this job has risen and the decline in employment figures has been stopped, as the statistics table shows.
But the profession is strongly linked to economic development. Job cuts are always to be expected in a recession.
